Parsimonious model of the HPA-axis. The figure shows a graphical outline and the corresponding mathematical equations of the parsimonious model as published in [10]. The focus of this model is the negative feedback of cortisol on the production of ACTH via an intracellular glucocorticoid receptor, which acts as a transcription factor in its dimerized form. Eventually, the model offers an intriguing explanation for the widely observed scenario of hypocortisolism.
